Behind The Foundation
Anant Pai this man is behind the beginning of the comic series. Now I’m telling you the off-told story behind the foundation.
Once Anant Pai was shocked when he saw in a quiz contest aired on Doordarshan in 1967 that Indian students could answer the question about Greek and Roman Mythology. Besides they are unable to answer questions of their own history, mythology, and folklore. They didn’t know who was Rama’s mother in Ramayana.
After the circumstance, Anant decided he did something to learn Indian people about their own cultural heritage. Then he founded Amar Chitra Kotha.
Initially, the comics series wasn’t written in the English language. The first ten was written in Kannada and it gained huge commercial success.
Then the magazine head office in Mumbai decided that they published it in English. They brought Anant Pai and he made a wonderful team.
In 1970, it was selling 7,00,000 copies monthly and 5 million yearly which was really huge.
Uncle Pai wrote the first few stories of the comic book. He hired a core team where was Luis Fernandes, Subba Rao, Kamala Chandrakant responsible for the balanced portrayal of history.
